Dampfer "Kaiser Wilhelm II"

Saturday, Septem. 29th, 1894.

How pleasant it is to escape expected inconveniences! And how delightful to have joy substituted therefor! This is our eighth day out and while each day has been different all have been charming --- one or two very calm, others with plenty of wind --- some gray, some clear, some stormy. Instead of being seasick, I have been very well and in place of an uncomfortable ship, I have found Kaiser Wilhelm extremely to my liking. And her commander, dear old Capt. Stoermer is one of the jolliest old sea dogs my mind can fancy. Of the passengers enough are worth knowing --- so all goes well --- and happily. Yesterday noon we sighted the Azores and during the whole afternoon our journeying was like a yachting cruise. Our good ship was run almost entirely around Foyal, the whole bight of San George, into the shadow of Pico and almost within speaking distance of Terceira. They added much to our trip and today I am wondering if any ocean voyage can be complete without a sunset over Terceira such as was seen from the Kaiser Wilhelm yesterday.

Among the many and touching god-sends received on board ship and before, there was a letter from Prof. Rice and such a one as only he can write --- In it he said "then if you see a sunrise over Pico, you will think ocean travel a real book". We arrived too late for the sunrise - but the sunset! well, it was of the kind no words can describe - like colors so delicate and sounds so sweet that neither can be distinguished from the other, like touches of friendship too subtile for analysis. And speaking of god-sends, I hope you know how deeply I appreciate the many expressions of regard which come so genuinely from yourself and others to me. Not only at Detroit, but in New York and on board ship.

The affection bestowed by my friends together with the regard lavished by the King resulted in a smash up of my nerves. But I have pinned (excuse spelling) my faith to the former and have forsaken the latter and soon I hope to be myself again.

With love to yourself and family,

Faithfully

P.S. Read Trilby carefully - to the very end.
