Dear Mr. Hecker:

I have found the large jars wanted for my garden and have purchased same (6 in all) from Guiseppe Pacini of this city and along with the jars also 6 small pieces of antique Roman Terra Cotta. All are of date prior to the 16th century and are entitled to free entry in America. I have had invoice made out in your name and enclose same herewith. Mr. Pacini will send with the goods or direct to you, certificate from the museum for use in clearing goods through Italian custom house, and which will also prove their quality and antiquity, should question of duty arise in Detroit. I am sorry to trouble you with these things, but I trust it will not disturb you very much. Will you kindly tell the Che'f to clean the jars with hot water before putting them away. The small pieces of Terra Cotta should not be cleaned, but put in the vault with my potteries. Spent today at Fiescle-splendid gardens and charming mountain climbing. Tomorrow A.M. I go direct to Naples. Expect to remain there one week--- then Rome for five or six days--- then direct to Paris, where I should arrive Nov. 3 to 6th, address in Paris will be care of Munroe and Co.

With kindest regards,

Hastily

Freer

The prices in all invoices sent to you are in Lire. The jars were made to hold oil or wine. You will I think consider them handsome for my garden.

Long hand.
