In this country it is particularly so. Country inns are entirely without chairs or tables, and the natives flock about one so thickly and interrupt one so frequently it is next to impossible to do any writing. Here in Kioto it is different as one can get as much privacy as is desired.

On my late Nakasendo trip my guide fell ill and I sent him on to Yokohama to recruit. I returned here for supplies and tomorrow or next day expect to start for the north shore of Japan, and work my way by jinricksha along the sea coast and through the mountains to Nikko. The trip will take nearly a month and I expect to see much fine scenery and many antiquities
