My dear Colonel:-

We landed at Liverpool on Saturday last at 11 o'clock A.M. and I found Mr. Chapman on the dock awaiting me. He insisted on "putting me up" with his intimate friend and business partner Mr. Shield, whose house is in the center of Liverpool's residential quarter. I reluctantly accepted, but in the end was delighted! He (Mr. Shield) is a splendid specimen of a fine old Scotch family, who is a bachelor, and who lives in fine style, with his dogs, birds, cats and garden; and occasionally "does a bit of engineering so as to keep up with the boys".

"May Day" was being celebrated when I walked ashore and so far as I could see the festivities did not cease until I stepped into a L.and N.W. train at Lime Street yesterday, for I was feasted and filled with art and champagne so long as I was within their reach. In fact, I had no chance to cable you of my arrival until I reached London yesterday evening.

Along with other delights while at Liverpool, I enjoyed a homely and pretty luncheon with Mr. Rea of Rossetti and Ichon fame, of Birkenhead.--- A great scholar, a noted collector and a noble Englishman of the present day school.

Today, I bought the Whistler and Agnew's Gallery, "Blue and Silver, Trouville" through Mr. Bromhead, Cottier and Co.'s London Agt. It's the one of which I spoke with you. Mr. Kennedy has a memorandum of it. The price is #12.500.00 f.o.b. New York. Duty if any to be paid by Cottier and Co. Express from N.Y. to Detroit at my expense. Mr. Inglis of Cottier and Co. of N.Y. will send you a bill for the picture. On receipt thereof will you kindly have the bill promptly paid and oblige.

The picture is one of the most subtle I have ever seen, but while the price is outrageous I could not resist it's purchase.

The Nocturne "Blue and Silver, Battersea Reach" I am told by Mr. Marchant has gone forward to Detroit. So Stephen will have these two things to look after. Kindly ask him to unbox both of them and place them in the vault. He understands.

I am just back from an hour's visit to Mr. Whistler's new home in Chelsea, next door to the old tower church which I am
