My dear Colonel:-

I am glad to have your two good letters of the 7th and 17th inst. containing so many interesting items and no new bad news- I had heard of poor Jim's (James T. McMillan) death and while it was of course to be looked for it came earlier [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] than expected and the shock was great- He was a splendid fellow!
