Dear Colonel Hecker;

This is a glorious spring morning and our obliging captain is maneuvering his ship in an interesting bay running inland into the island of Sardenigia [[Sardinia]]. He says he is doing all of this for two reasons: First, to assure his passengers. Second, to delay his arrival at Naples until seven o'clock tomorrow morning, so as to afford his passengers a fine morning view of the sail up the bay of Naples. The first officer however, tells us the captain is testing a new compass. Whatever the cause the 
experience is pleasant and an opportunity is afforded to write
