My stay here has been very charming as well as instructive. The French collections are a fine lot of means and have beautiful things.

The Gillot collection contains some of the most beautiful Japanese things I have ever seen.

When I see you next, I will tell you an extraordinary circumstance in connection with my acquaintance with Mr. Koechlin, the foremost collector of Oriental art in Paris. It will amuse you greatly. The French Government has offered him the position of Director of Fine Arts to the St. Louis Expedition but as yet he has not yet accepted. I hope he will.
