Dear Colonel Hecker,
I am working to get hold of some expensive things but, as yet, am uncertain of success. Should I get them I shall need between five and ten thousand dollars. Not wanting to exhaust my letter of credit and thinking that the ready money might help I cabled you this evening as follows,

Statue tanager sidecut
send me by mail $10.000 Enjoying myself still.

I think the Peoples State Bank can give their own draft or that of Brown Bros & Co payable in Yokohama. I may not secure the things I am negotiating for and in this event I can take back the drafts to America. This has been another active day spent with the Director General at the Imperial Museum. Tomorrow I visit Count Dales' collection and the day following I am to see Mr. Gejo's private collection. There is lots of hard work along with unlimited pleasure in what I am doing but I am standing the racket all night.
With all good wishes
Very sincerely yours,
Charles L. Freer.
