Dear Colonel Hecker,
A letter from Mr Kennedy reached me at Beyrouth yesterday, just as I was starting for Damascus. The letter brought news of your sisters passing, and I wish, though very late, to express my sympathy in your sorrow. Through this recent loss, I believe you are left with out brother or sister and this, I am sure, brings to you a certain sense of peculiar loss; a singular loneliness, which in its own way is hard to face, aside from the many feelings always stirred
