Grand Hotel des Wagons-Lits,
Peking, Sept. 19th/09

Dear Colonel Hecker,
I was delightfully surprised to receive the enclosed note from the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation at the hour of its openings to business, 10 o'clock yesterday morning, as it showed how promptly such a transaction could be accomplished and put me in funds for use yesterday --- a matter of importance the details of which are too lengthy for a letter, but they will amuse at the time of one of our future chats.
Your cablegram came with the funds reading "Cabled teiltree, Sherbet". In reply I wired you last evening "Received teiltree, Thanks! Spider, marvels" ---translated means that I have received your remitance of two thousands pounds sterling, and deeply grateful and that with a part of the money I have already purchased some marvellous art objects. It will please you to know that these funds have helped me to early paintings by the greatest of Sung and Yuan painters such as no Europeans or Americans Museum --- and I can safely add Japan has --- including Riviomin in superb style and condition --- two specimens --- and others of almost equal rank.
I appreciate too the promptness of the Peoples State Bank in this matter and I hope that when opportunity offers you will kindly extend my thanks to the official who did the work.
Give my special regards to George H. Russel too.
Excuse this hurried note, I must rush off and spend the balance of the remittance before some competitor enters my "diggins".
With all good messages and warmest thanks
Yours very sincerely
Charles L. Freer
