My dear Coloner Hecker - 

This city is to me, what Horiuji was to Fenollosa at the time of his first visit.
And I am filled with wonder. Pages would frighten you and their filling would be futile, but when I am back home again I'll let photographs tell the story. This note is only to tell you that I keep well and happy -  a little sore in my feet and legs caused by the worst roads under heaven - and miles, hundreds of miles much worse, as an Irishman would say, before me!

My folding cot beats a "khagn"(Chinese sleeping plank) out of sight; my cook equals Ruben, which is saying things boldly; my "boy" is as quick as "George" at the Yon and as diplomatic as George Cheek - As commanding General, Nan outranks that Frenchman who quit at Waterloo. My photographer Utai, has proved so useful I could not restrain my praise, and this evening for the purpose of stopping it, I fancy, he for the first time, told
