Memorandum relating to the letter from Mr. Charles L. Freer to Colonel Frank J. Hecker, dated Detroit, June 11, 1917.

The objects by, or related to, James McNeill Whistler and Mrs. Whistler, referred to in Mr. Freer's letter, and which are described in the following three lists ---

"LIST OF ETCHINGS AND DRYPOINTS, BY JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER, RESERVED SEPTEMBER 1, 1914."

"LIST OF LITHOGRAPHS, BY JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER, RESERVED SEPTEMBER 1, 1914."

"MISCELLANEOUS LIST OF WHISTLER'S WORK, INCLUDING OIL PAINTING, PASTELS, DRAWINGS, WOOD ENGRAVINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS RESERVED SEPTEMBER 1, 1914."

are being sent to Washington as Reserved objects, with the understanding that such objects among them as are originals by Mr. Whistler should be transferred to the Smithsonian and labelled "S.I.", after they are received in Washington.  Such objects as are not original works of art by Whistler, are to have further examination, so that the method of classifying them may be then determined.
