My dear Mr. Hedley:

Your kind letter of January 22nd, sent to Detroit, was forwarded to me here, and its receipt and possession is a real pleasure. 

I am glad to know that you are located in America, and I hope that you are finding life over here entirely to your liking. California has a delightful climate, and I fancy that the good work you are doing will have a splendid effect, not only along the Pacific coast, but throughout America. This country needs greater knowledge of Chinese history, civilization and culture, and the Pacific coast seems to me to be a logical point from which educational information should radiate throughout the United States.

I am extremely sorry to learn of your unfortunate experience at my Detroit residence when you called there during November 1913. At that time my residence was closed, as it is today, and the house and galleries were in charge of watchmen, who should have responded to your call and explained the situation.

During the last four years I have experiences a lot of illness, and because thereof I have spent much time here in quest of proper medical attention, and during this period my residence has
