December 12, 1916.

Mr. Charles L. Freer,
Hotel Plaza, New York.

Dear Mr. Freer:
I was much interested in what you said at our last meeting about efforts being made to establish a better understanding between Japan and this country. I personally feel, as no doubt a great many American citizens do, that there is a danger lurking - the same as it was between England and Germany and it seems to me that all possible efforts should be made to bring the two nations together for a closer understanding of any question that might give rise to friction.
It occurred to me that one feature could be taken up in connection with the Society you mentioned, namely, to make it possible for Japanese students of medicine, and Japanese physicians to come to this country and avail themselves of the opportunities of Post Graduate medical work in its practical aspect as well as research. I should be most happy if I personally could contribute something toward this end and, as one of the Directors of the New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital, I would be in position not only in our own institution but in other post graduate institutions in this country, create a sentiment in favor of particular attention and courtesies for the Japanese students.
I thought I would write you about this matter as you might care to include same in your suggestions at one of your meetings.
Sincerely yours,
Ludwig Kast
MR
