Dear Tryon:-

I fancy you have already received the prospectus from The Corcoran Gallery of Art at Washington concerning an exhibition of contemporary American oil paintings to be held during February and March next. Mr. McGuire, the Director, has written me as per copies of his letters of October sixteenth and seventeenth enclosed herewith. I have told him that in accordance with my usual practice I am consulting the artists of the paintings invited and shall give him my decision after hearing from the artists. How do you feel? It strikes me that in view of the exhibition being held in Washington during a session of congress and being confined strictly to American work, I ought to co-operate. To be sure, the system of awarding prizes is unjust and the public will surely derive wrong comparative impressions of the esthetics
