No. 33 Ferry Avenue,
Detroit, Michigan,
November 3rd.,1906.

Dear Mr. President:-

I am planning to sail from New York on the fifteenth instant en route to Egypt, Ceylon and Java for the purpose of continuing my study of Oriental Art and of making such additions as I may find possible to the collection recently given by me to the Smithsonian Institution.

I am informed that in Java it is somewhat difficult for strangers to get access to certain places of special antiquarian interest without an influential introduction. If consistent with your rules and if entirely agreeable to you, may I ask a brief line of introduction either from you or the State Department ?

If I am asking for more than I should, or if for any reason you cannot comply with my request, I trust you will not hesitate to say so.

Believe me, with great respect,

Very respectfully,
Charles L. Freer
