Dear Professor Fenolossa:-

Your good letter of the fifth instant came yesterday afternoon. The Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Society was held at my residence during the evening, and much disappointment was expressed by many of my guests because you could not be with us. Doctor Angell, too, was prevented from attending because of a recent operation. After the business of the meeting was completed, Professor D'Ooge, of Ann Arbor, delivered an interesting address and was followed by Matsuki, who surprised the audience by a fifteen minute speech. He spoke most interestingly, telling of Horiuji and Sosho-in, and touched briefly upon the influence of the tea ceremony. Of course, his English was a little off, but he spoke with much feeling and sprinkled remarks with an occasional joke. He really delighted the entire audience, including about a dozen professors from Ann Arbor, Orchard Lake and Olivet. About one hundred and twenty-five people were present and the affair ended very successfully. The Ann Arbor people were especially disappointed in not meeting you.

I shall leave Detroit on Sunday evening, which is the earliest I can get away, and spend Monday afternoon with my relatives
