nothing from either Mr. Yamamoto or Mr. Mayeda, and have written Mr. Yamamoto for information. Meanwhile the case remains not entered at the Custom House.

The day before yesterday, I received your letter written from Naples on the 4th inst., and was glad to hear from you and to know that your week's stay in Naples proved delightful. I note what you say relative to Herr Kummel, and of the matter of the window guards. Herr Kummel has not called at the house, and I have explained to Stephen your instructions relative to persons calling to see the collection. The full sized drawing of the grating which you stated was sent under a separate cover, has not yet been received, and upon its receipt, Mr. Hatashita, myself and Stephen will meet at the house and compare measurements, etc. etc. As Col. Hecker thinks you must have written him a letter on the 3rd instant, and as the full sized drawing has not been received, my fancy is that Col. Hecker's letter and the drawing came by a slower route than your letters of the 4th inst. to him and me.

Mr. Ushikubo writes that he is holding the shipment of the things you purchased just before you left in his possession, as Prof. Fenollosa wishes to take photographs of them. You did not mention in your advice to me that you had given permission for Prof. Fenollosa to have the photographs taken, but I assume you told Mr. Ushikubo and that it is all right.

Stephen has begun the calcimining work in the cellar. Everything is all right at the house.

The day after tomorrow, (Saturday, the 22nd) I send off the Christmas checks to Kingston and the servants.

No receipts or payments of any consequence, have been made during the week, so that your cash balance stands about as it was when I last wrote.

Col. Hecker is also sending a letter to you to-day, and it, mine and the box are addressed Care, Credit Lyonnais, Cairo, but as a precaution against their not reaching Cairo before your departure for Ceylon, we have advised the Manager of Credit Lyonnais to forward them to Colombo, Ceylon, Care Thomas Cook & Son, in the absence of other instructions from you, in case they arrive after you leave

Trust you are keeping very well and enjoying your travels, I remain,
Very respectfully yours,
JM Kennedy
