Friend Bixby:-

Your letter of October 3rd. came during my absence from the city and only to-day I returned and now have an opportunity to acknowledge your goodness. Thanks for the slip concerning Whistler's relative. Colonel Whistler, the uncle of the artist, was a prominent figure in early days and had to do with military work in many places throughout the North-west, including Chicago and Fort Wayne. From all accounts he was a great disciplinarian, and judging from what I have heard of that Colonel, his nephew, the artist, must have reflected many of the leading family traits. They were both "birds" of fine plumage.

Thanks, too, for your goodness concerning the forthcoming book of letters. What an interesting volume
