My dear Mr. Seligman:

Thank you for your letter of the 26th. From your previous letter, I did not understand that you wished the scholarship given to a student who was just beginning his or her studies, so that he or she might be encouraged to work in a field in which you are particularly interested. Since Miss Costello was the one person who was working in the field of French painting, and has done excellent work in that field before 1800, I assumed that I was assisting the most deserving person among our students, so that she could complete her Ph. D.

However, since only one-half of the scholarship has thus far been given her, I will use the other half of the grant in the second semester, when a course will be given in the field of 17th and 18th Century Painting in France, and will then send you the name of the student taking it.

Again I wish you to know how deeply I appreciate your kind and generous assistance, and you can count upon our carrying out your wishes.

Sincerely yours,

Walter W. S. Cook
