Dear Mr. Seligman:

I thank you very much for your kind letter of September 5th with enclosed check for $500., which will be listed as given by "Germain Seligman".

We will be glad to use these funds to help an unmarried student, boy or girl, desirous of taking a course in French art before 1800. It might be a student taking a course with Professor Craig Smyth during the second term on 17th and 18th Century Painting in France, or a student in Professor Walter Friedlaender's Problems of Baroque Painting, if he decides to give that course in the history of French painting. When we have selected the student to whom this aware will be made, we will give you his or her name and the course to be taken so that you will have an opportunity to meet the student. There is one suggestion I would make,- namely, that if there should be two students who need assistance, it might be possible for me to divide the scholarship between two young people. Many students who come here have sufficient funds to pay for their living expenses if they do not have outside positions, but the most crying need of our Institute is to have sufficient funds to cover the amounts necessary for so-called tuition scholarships. If you could drop me a line telling me about this, or give me your feeling concerning it some time when I see you, I would appreciate it.

In any case, I wish you to know how deeply grateful I am to you for such a generous contribution, which is more helpful than I can tell you.

I was very pleased when Mrs. Seligman decided to take Dr. Weinberger's course in Renaissance Sculpture in Italy, and informed me that you also intended to audit the course.

With kindest personal regards, believe me,

Sincerely yours,

Walter W.S. Cook
