Oberlin, Ohio, December 22, 1965 --- The Executive Committee of the Oberlin College Board of Trustees has voted to merge the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology with the Vanderbilt University Divinity School at the end of the present academic year and move it to Nashville. The Vanderbilt Board of Trustees approved the merger last Friday to Nashville.

Legal authorization for Oberlin to transfer to Vanderbilt certain endowment funds will be sought from the Ohio courts. Such approval is all that remains to make the merger effective.

The plan for the merger was announced by Oberlin's President Robert K. Carr and Vanderbilt's Chancellor Alexander Heard.

In announcing the action, President Carr said "After a careful investigation of various alternatives, the trustees of Oberlin College and the faculty of the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology have concluded that a merger with Vanderbilt will best preserve the Oberlin tradition in theological studies and create an unusually strong center of excellence for theological education. In particular, the two institutions' long-standing commitment to interdenominational studies makes this merger a logical and exceedingly promising venture."

Chancellor Heard said: "Vanderbilt is deeply conscious of the trust placed in the University by Oberlin's trustees and faculty. We will use the combined resources in greater service to the nation by raising standards and improving the quality of education for ministries."
