and I shall send you a remittance within a few days. As you can well understand, I am in the midst of the vast accumulation of correspondence, &c. but ere long the decks will be clear.

On my arrival in San Francisco, I promptly looked up the Belden family and made an engagement to call upon them the next day. I went in the afternoon and they kept me to dinner and until late in the evening. The visit was very enjoyable indeed, notwithstanding that younger of the two girls, Miss. Margurite, is laid up with a broken leg. She seemed to be, however a very cheerful sufferer and the hours flew quickly by. You will remember that I had met both of the young ladies before, but this was my first meeting with their parents. It was all very nice and a pretty little event in my travels.

At my house, I found everything in perfect order and the pictures all looking better than ever.
