Rev. C.W. Sharpe has gone to the Kanawha Valley to forward the good work in that region. Judging from appearances he will do well. The school houses in Martinsburg, Shepherdstown, and Charlestown, are making slow progress. The land in each place is now secured, and when an understanding is arrived at, and the material furnished I think there will be no more delay. 

The Normal and Preaparatory School of the Howard University closed with the month. This first term has been a real success for the school, as an excellent thorough school for colored youth. As a Normal School, it has been almost a failure, very few attending who have teaching directly in view. As a Preparatory school, it has been very primary in character. It will take a long time to fit these pupils for a Freshman class in the College if the cirriculum of study is to be like that in other colleges. I respectfully recommend that the services of Rev. E.F. Williams, and Miss Lord be secured for the next term if possible, which term should commence on the 1st of October.

The whole number of scholars at the close of the term was 59. — 40 males, and 19 females. Average attendance
