Daniel Merriman, Esq.,
73 Bay State Road,
Boston, Mass.

My dear Mr. Merriman:-
Replying to your kind letter of January 23rd, I regret that it is impossible for me to find exact terms by which to express my recollection of the coloring of the Whistler painting, but I can say that the effect is very rich and much warmer in dark-reddish and brownish tones than the majority of Mr. Whistler's late productions, and I doubt very much if in the future, it will be possible to get as fine an example of his work, both technically and in color, at any where near the figure asked for the picture in question.

Now, regarding the price: I must tell you that the value of £1,500 was my own suggestion to Miss Birnie-Philip, and I deem it fair to both purchaser and seller, as I would willingly pay that price myself for the picture.

The owner of the other picture mentioned to you in one of my earlier letters, has decided to keep his treasure.
