is very well and as usual always busy about something, wonderful energy he has.

I returned to a very different situation in this country to that in which I left it and it is intensely interesting. The chief difference in London is at night. so few street lamps & those shaded, no shop windows brilliant with effect of gloom in streets. I find it uncomfortable to walk, street kerb [[curb]] edges not distinguishable & extreme caution required in crossing streets. There are a great many men in khaki to be seen, open spaces such as our square & gardens with recruits drilling, otherwise little to indicate a nation at war. I miss the American newspapers which have more & earlier news than in this country. Our censor is a variety of ostrich. You will hardly believe that not a word has been printed of the sinking of the "Audacious", [[strikethrough]] V [[/strikethrough]] even the French official communiqués are out so our poor papers are compelled to fill up with extracts from letters of soldiers which I think sometimes give a wrong impression. Even Mr. Irwin Cobb's January interview [[strikethrough]] 4 [[\strikethrough]] with Lord Kitchener was trimmed but I take in the Sat'y Ev'g Post so have it in full as well as his other extremely interesting articles on the German lines, none of which have been reprinted here.

The general feeling in this country is as usual that we must win but that it must be a long struggle as we must be wofully [[woefully]] short of equipment. A young friend of mine has had command of a marine corp for 2½ months & they have not yet got a gun. I don't know whether you heard why the Germans print Kultur with a K, answer is, because England has possession of all the C's. Very best regards & wishes for the New Year. Please remember me to Miss Leach if with you, & to Mr. "Stephen".

Yours very sincerely
J. Orange
