Additional endorsements for letter of Capt. Porter, dated Navasota, Texas, July 21st, 1866 (P.21.) E.B. 111.1), which was returned by Capt. Craig with Statements as follows:

"The facts in the case after thorough investigation are that he undertook to raise money for a schoolhouse for the freedmen on the 4th of July by giving a dinner his plan was an entire failure as he is now out of pocket $11.13/100, and if all the tickets sold had been paid for, the money raised for the contemplated purpose would have been $10.57/100 over necessary expenses. The whole affair was conducted in a perfectly orderly and proper manner. The freedmen preceeded by the School children marched through the town, and the little children sang Union songs "The Union forever &c" and one in which the expression "Will hang Jeff Davis &c occurs. The procession through the town was forbidden by Mrs. [[Whamie?]]. She never taught them the songs does not sing them herself. Besides the Editor of the paper who gave rise to these newspaper reports knows that the negroes children have been in the habit of singing these songs for 6 months back. I have heard and you will probably remember hearing the same from the employees of one of the most respectable ladies in this community at her own door. The newspaper wilfully published the most exaggerated and lying statement of the whole affair, besides indulging in personal insults and abuse of the grossest nature against Mr. [[Whamie?]] and wife. As evidence I examined Several freedmen who assisted in conducting the affair there were only 60 tickets sold at $1.00 each"
