Archer, J. H. S.A. Comr.

Endorsement on the letter of W. H. Sinclair, Sub-Asst. Comr. dated Galveston, Texas, Jan. 18. 1867. (L.S. 850.) which was returned Jan. 21, 1867 by J. H. Archer Sub. Asst. Comr. endorsed as follows:

"Respectfully returned with the information that I know nothing of "Hendricks" in this matter. As I understand the case Hargrove contracted with the freedpeople, but afterwards sold out to Capt. "Boyd" or "Borge". The contracts with the freedpeople however were never properly transferred from Hargrove to Boyd, hence I hold that both parties are responsible to the freedmen and that is why I requested that the cotton of both should be stopped. It appears that Boyd has gone North and left Hargrove to settle with the freedpeople which he (as the freedmen report to me) refuses to do - hence my action in the matter."

Which was returned January 23. 1867 by Toohe & Haden endorsed as follows:

"In answer to your communications answered, we beg to inform you that the 16 Bales cotton W.J.H. received by us was raised on Judge Waller's plantation by Mr. Hendricks on which the freedmen have been all settled with and acknowledged the same. In confirmation of which we refer you to Judge Waller, who was present. The cotton raised on the plantation by Captain Boyd on joint account with Mr. R. M. Hargrove was consigned to another house in this city. We received none of it."

Hd Qurs. B.R.F. &c.
State of Texas,
Galveston Jan. 23, 1867.

Respectfully returned to Lt. J. H. Archer, inviting attention to endorsement of Messrs. Tooh & Haden hereon. If this statement be correct the cotton will be released at once.

By order of Bvt. Maj. Gen. Kiddoo.
