Additional Endorsement on the letter of Robert Vallentine (f.m.) which was returned by Bvt. Lt. Col. W. B. Pease, S.A. Comr. at Houston May 4, 1867 endorsed as follows:- (V. 5.) (E.B. 356) (E.B. 396)

"Respectfully returned with the information that I have sent for and examined the within named parties including Mr. Duer and their eldest children, Andrew, Levy and Seeley. Soon after the death of the Children's parents, Mr. Duer called at my office and stated the facts, also representing that there was some property coming to the children that would probably be dissapated by the freedmen having charge of them; said that he desired to protect their interests as he had formerly owned them and asked my advice in the matter. I told him I thought it would be best to take out papers of guardianship for the children which he did in the County Court giving

$2500.00/100 bonds. Soon afterwards certain freedmen called at my office and left the affidavits that I inclose. Some days afterwards the man Robin called and laid claim to the boy Andrew as his own son by Titus wife before she was married; upon this backed by the testimony of others I directed that the letter of guardianship should be revoked in Andrew's case. The boy Levy prefers to remain with Mr. Duer; the girl Seeley wishes to stay with her aunt - Robin's wife. The other children are too young to express a choice. I do not think that Robin is able to support all these children and I think it is the little money coming to them that has led him to seek for them. It will perhaps be best to divide the children among the people claiming kinship to them and I request instructions as to the disposition of the property. I inclose affidavits of Louis Henderson f.m.c. and Washington Thomas f.m.c. Also statement of f.m.c. Duer."
