Respectfully returned to Judge F. P. Wood Sub. Asst Comr at Brenham. The Laws of the State will be complied with. Their defects will be made apparent by having them fully carried out, The Legislature must apply the remedy if the existing Laws are oppressive to any class of citizens
The Freedpeople have a remedy by making contracts for monthly payments, or such other arrangements as their experience may prove to be efficacious.

Respectfully returned to Lieut Gregory Barrett S.A.C at Tyler. Texas. The action of the Sub. Asst Comr is approved. As the State Law will probably prevent the forced collection of the whole amount it is suggested that the plaintiff would do well to take the $8.00/100

Lee J. G. C. Bvt Lt Col.
A.Q.M.

Endorsement on the letter of. H. L. Radaz. dated San. Antonio, Texas, October. 7, 1867. R. 69. EB. 191
Which was endorsed by Bvt Brig. Gen. Jno. S. Mason dated San Antonio Texas, October. 9, 1868. as follows.

Respectfully referred to Bvt Maj Gen Reynolds, Commanding District of Texas, and Assistant Commissioner. B.R.F. & A.L. This building is reported on report of Abandoned Lands, and has been occupied since November. 21. 1866. as a Post Hospital at a monthly rental of one hundred dollars, I know nothing more about the case than is herein presented,

The following is endorsement by Brevet Major E W. Whittemore. on letter sent 477. vol 2. in regard to above communication. dated San Antonio. Texas. May 12. 1868.

Respectfully returned. I am inclined to the belief that the transfer to Radaz was a sham.
Julius Hayer, notary public will make affidavit, to the fact that he visited Duff to make the acknowledgement of the deed, found Duff packed up to leave. Duff left next day. Mr Hoyer states that he understood the instrument to be a transfer, as no money passed in his presence.
Mr Martin Campbell states that Radaz was Duff's clerk and had neither money or credit to purchase Duff's property, others are willing to swear that to the best of belief and knowledge the sale was a sham. From the information I can gather I am satisfied that the property was transferred from Duff to Radaz to present (on his leaving) the taking of the property by the U.S. as abandoned. Radaz has the reputation of having been a very bitter rebel during the war. Duff was prominent in persecuting Union men and was obliged to leave.

Headquarters District of Texas.

Respectfully referred to Bvt Lieut Col. J. G. C Lee, A.Q.M. San. Antonio. Texas.
Is this property carried on his papers? If so is rent paid for the same, and to whom?

By order of Brevet Major General, J. J. Reynolds.
