And was returned to Maj Gen. O. O. Howard with letter sent. (745 vol 2.) dated August, 31st 1868, which was endorsed by N. H. Randlett dated. Bryan, Texas, Sept. 7. 1868 as follows,

Respectfully returned to Bvt Capt. C. S. Roberts. A.A.A. Gen Austin. Texas, with the following remarks, The reason why the papers were not returned sooner was that I was unable to find the freedgirl Lula. though I made two special trips to Grimes County for that purpose.
At the time Maj. Mosback's [[Moseback's]] letter was received, I immediately wrote to Mr Hill. and received an answer that Lula had left his employ a short time after coming to Texas, that he knew nothing of her whereabouts, I went to Anderson in the latter part of May and made enquiry throughout that portion of the Co without success. On receipt of letter of inquiry from H'd Qurs. I again visited Grimes Co & asked the leading freedmen to make special inquiry, and if successful to inform me at once; as no information was derived from these sources, and receiving a second letter from H'd Qurs. I visited Mr Hill to get his statement in full. He informed me that he saw Lula on the cars a few days previous, that she told him she was now living at Navasota, which place I immediately visited and found her statement materially the same as Mr Hill's. I then returned the papers without delay.
