My Dear Mr. Hara:-

I have delayed answering your delightful letter of January 4th until after the receipt of the beautiful wood Kannon of Fujiwara period, with which you so kindly presented me. The heavy snow storms of the winter blockaded our railway lines running from the Pacific Coast eastward. This delayed the delivery of the Kannon until a few days ago. However, it and the Nara bronze came together in perfect condition, and I fail to find words in which to thank you for your beautiful gift. From this beautiful wood Kannon I hope to learn much of the style of the Fujiwara [[strikethrough]] scholars. [[/strikethrough]] sculptors. I shall study it with the greatest care, and its presence in my home will ever remain a delightful souvenir of my visit at San no Tani; - not that any memento is necessary to keep San no Tani fresh in my memory, but the visit with its enduring charm, and the figure with its wonderful qualities unite in creating an impression which to me is extremely agreeable.

I was much pleased also to receive your drawing
