My dear Mr. Gookin:

I have just returned from a ten day absence in the east and find your good letter of December 14th, also another from Doctor Webster, bearing upon the same subject. 

It gives me real pleasure to know of the contemplated visit, and I hope, that nothing will prevent its consummation. Dr. Webster suggested, that his party arrive here on the morning of January 1st, next, but it so happens, that that day is inconvenient for me as I must attend the annual dinner of the Yondotega Club on that day; being its Chairman I cannot absent myself, and the feast is one of the old-fashioned kind, which begins practically at dawn and ends at sun-set. I have, therefore, asked Dr. Webster to come on the following day, January 2nd, and remain until Monday evening, or, if he would prefer, to come one week earlier, arriving here on Christmas morning, or, if that is impossible, then the next morning thereafter and remain until Sunday or Monday evening. I quite understand that many people count upon being home on Christmas day, and it may be, that you all have engagements for that day; if so, can you not come to me the following day? How, I am leaving the choice of the dates to you and your
