Dr. Wolcott -

already presented to the Smithsonian Institution. Of course, this offer pleased Mr. Dewing and myself greatly, and I accepted it on the spot; the result will be, that whenever the Dewing work now in my care, goes to your Institution, the one now in the possession of Mr. Tryon will be added to my group. "The Garland" is one of Mr. Dewing's most successful pictures and ranks with the very best of American art, and, I feel, that the action of Mr. Tryon is one of especial significance. It certainly is a fine thing for a leading American artist to give such strong proof of his interest in the National Collection of the Fine Arts, is it not? The title to this painting will be transferred to your Institution along with my next inventory of additional gifts which will be printed and handed to you sometime during the present year.

Believe me,
Very sincerely yours,
Charles L. Freer
