Mrs. Fenollosa-

also had a few moments conversation with Mr. Hayashi whom I met hastily at the American Art Association Galleries where I called to see Mr. Kirby; Mr. Hayashi did not speak of your collection of prints, as there was no opportunity to do so, but Mr. Ushikubo and the Messrs Yamanaka mentioned the prints and I asked them what they believed the chances were of your being able to dispose of them to good advantage in Japan [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] en-bloc. I judged from their conversation that they do not feel very enthusiastic concerning their sale in Japan, but they told me that Mr. Hayashi intended to visit Japan some time during the coming summer and that he hopes then to interest either Mr. Fujita or Mr. Sumitomo, in the subject with the hope of inducing one of these two wealthy collectors to buy and keep the collection intact. I asked the Yamanakas and Mr. Ushikubo what they would think of allowing Doctor Webster to buy one hundred of the choicest prints in the collection, and they replied, that"of course it would be all right if Doctor Webster would pay a sufficient sum for the choice of one hundred prints, but that unless the price was a considerable part of the value of the whole collection, it would be a mistake to allow him to have a portion of the collection." These details also are mentioned for your information in a confidential way. My object in writing these particulars, is to let you know how the collection is being spoken of by these gentlemen who are familiar with it.
