My dear Mrs. Fenellosa:-

Your very kind and interesting letter of January 23rd, reached me here, just as I was leaving for a trip to New York. I am very glad to have had word from you concerning the very appropriate memorial services, held for Professor Fenellosa, in Japan, just at that time, because, while in New York I met a number of Japanese friends, who were much interested in the matter and with whom, it was a comfort to discuss the memorial services.

I had the pleasure, also, of talking with Mr. Hayashi about the prints. You know, he is soon to sail for Japan and it was my last conversation with him prior to his departure. He seems somewhat hopeful of finding a purchaser in Japan for the entire collection, but I do not feel quite as sanguine, personally on this point as does Mr. Hayashi - still, he should be, and doubtless is, much closer in touch with the Japanese collectors than I am, or ever can be. In the meantime, should you decide to await word from Mr. Hayashi after he reaches Japan, the Chicago collectors may, after more careful thought, rise to a keener appreciation of the value of the collection.

Since my return from New York, I have been very busy and deeply interested in, an attempt being made in my gallery to reproduce the more important Whistler paintings in my collection, by the Lumeire colored
