SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
UNITED STATES NATIONAL MUSEUM
WASHINGTON, D. C.

OFFICE OF
ASSISTANT SECRETARY,
SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
IN CHARGE U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM

August 8, 1917.

Charles L. Freer, Esq.,
33 Ferry Avenue, East,
Detroit, Michigan.

Dear Mr. Freer:

I am sending you herewith photographic prints showing progress on the building, dated July 2 and August 2. The former failed to be transmitted at the proper time through inadvertence. They were taken from the top of the tower of the Smithsonian building, and that of the latter date represents the sub-basement as pretty well covered with the four scaffolds constructed.

Not knowing where you are at present, I am addressing this to Detroit. I am sure, however, that you must be located at some comfortable spot, presumably in the Berkshires, where I trust your health is constantly improving, so that we may soon see you in Washington.

Mr. Walcott has been troubled with snow in the Canadian Rockies, but we would very gladly exchange conditions with him in that respect.

With very best wishes, believe me,

Very truly yours,
R Rathbun
Assistant Secretary
in charge of National Museum.
