SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
UNITED STATES NATIONAL MUSEUM
WASHINGTON, D.C.

OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY,
SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
IN CHARGE U. S. NATIONAL MUSEUM

October 12, 1917.

Mr. Charles L. Freer,
The Plaza,
New York City.

My dear Mr. Freer:

I am sending you herewith a photograph showing progress on the new building, taken October 2, from the top of the Smithsonian tower. This picture, however, is already out of date, as the walls are higher today, and there is a great quantity of stone on the ground.

They are threatening to complete the building much earlier than I expected, which is, indeed, a very good kind of threat. The work is going on finely and rapidly, and I am ready to believe that they will finish as they say.

Mr. Walcott is expected back early next week, with a great load of specimens, after what seems to have been a successful season in many respects.

Trusting that you are doing nicely, believe me,

Very truly yours,
R Rathbun
Assistant Secretary
in charge of National Museum.
