these will undoubtedly be turned over to me and as there has been no provisions made for them I am in doubt how to proceed.

I already see that I shall need the assistance of a clerk or Penman, and an orderly and as I hear that all the troops are to leave Hempstead within a week I feel necessitated to request that they may be detailed from those stationed at Houston or Galveston. I have been in the saddle most of the time since my arrival here but have not fully satisfied myself yet in regard to the condition of the Plantation hands in this vicinity I expect to make a circuit of Grimes Co. in a few days as I have been applied to in regard to a number of cases there.
