I beg leave to submit the following Statements and inquiries and would request information in regard to the same.

I have received an order from Lt Col DeGress through the Comdg Officer of the Post of Brenham to cease charging or receiving pay for approving or drawing up Contracts. This would reflect on me as a Military Officer for receiving pay for doing that which is my duty to do without compensation. I do not know on what authority DeGress issued this order as to my receiving pay for approving Contracts. I denounce it as a base and malicious falsehood. I have however charged for drawing up Contracts for an interest in the crops or land rented or Shares where I could not use the blanks furnished. Circumstances compeled me to do so. They require a great deal of writing and I have no clerk and there are none among the Garrison at this place that I can have detailed and the people generaly prefer having those Contracts drawn up in my office [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] and signed by the Freedmen in my presence which they are more than willing to pay for. To accomodate them I employed a clerk to come to my office on the most busy days and draw
