he remains among us we want him educated. How can this be done? The necessity of education you know without any remarks from me. I would be glad to have a free and full conversation with you upon many points in reference to the Negro in his present & future they are behaving now in this Community as before remarked in the main very well, as well as any one could expect. they manifest some anxiety to be educated but there are many things in the way - 1st there are no men among the Negroes educated that are capable of educating their children & they have no houses and there has never been any Southern teachers engaged in teaching the negro- the Methodist church here are furnishing them as in the Gospel and I as the steward of the church house have made arrangements to let them have our church house regularly- free of rent. & we are as a people anxious to give them all the moral training we can- another point General I would suggest your consideration upon it is this - cannot some order be issued requiring all Freedman who have been living together as man & wife to obtain License and be regularly married- My opinion is it would result in good. be glad General to hear from you. and give you assurance General that aid I can give in establishing peace order and Law as an humble individual will be cheerfully given
