August 4th 1865

To whom it may concern:

As an act of justice, I take pleasure in stating that Judge Wm J Jones of Virginia Point, near this place, was an unconditional Unionist, opposing secession and all moves or measures leading to that end. I have not met with him since the war commenced, but frequently heard from him, during its progress, and from all sources learn he remains unchanged in his principles and adhesion to the Union. And while self preservation rendered it necessary for him to observe a prudent silence, his political position seems to have been well understood by the Rebels, who appropriated to their use any of his property they desired and destroyed much
