Nacogdoches Texas

As the year is approaching its close it is deemed important for the wellbeing of the country, that the freedmen of this section of the State be informed of their exact civil status, and thoroughly impressed with the necessity and importance, both to themselves and the white race, of engaging for the comming year in some useful employment;

Thus far the negroes have been left in doubt, and consequently have indulged in extravagant conjectures in regard to their rights and duties in their new relation.  They need information and it should, we conceive, be imparted to them, as early as practicable.

Therefore we the subscribers, citizens of Nacogdoches County Texas, would respectfully recommend, and ask the appointment of a Provost Marshall for said County. And deeming Mr. Wm Clark Jr as eminently qualified for that position, (and he having consented to act in that capacity if appointed) would ask that the appointment be conferred upon him, Mr. C. is a gentleman
