Dear Genl
I am in want of immediate instructions. Although it is a disagreeable necesity; yet I am determined to do my duty. I will proceed to give you the case as represented by the freedman, who makes his complaint. He is living with my neighbor Col Holland; Holland sends the boy to his neighbor D. Lawson after a mule running in Lawsons field, the boy rode a mile round Lawsons field in order to get into the field through the gate; he asks permission to go through the gate, it was granted by Lawson; whereupon Lawson asked him where he was going  The boy told him after Col Hollands mule running in the field. Lawson then told him to go & get it, & if he ever caught him on his premises again, he would shoot him. The boy replied, no Sir
