I recken not; the boy rode on, and Lawson mounted his horse, came after him, with a gun & poped a cap. The gun failing fine, Lawson dismounted his horse and took up a stick & broke it over the shoulder of the boy throwing the stick after him as the boy ran away. I hardly know what action to take. It was certainly an assault, an aggravated assault & battery with intent to kill. Is he now liable to the civil law? or what are my duties in the premises? I wish to do right and must ask your instructions. I saw several planters after leaving you on yesterday, who are coming up to their work nobly; some offering to give $12½ per month, others one third of crop. I think the thing will all work right. Please let me hear from you immediately.
