Grimes County Dec. 8th/65 Dear Genl I commenced upon the responsible duties of my office as soon as you left - adjudicating the rights of the freedmen of Grimes County County - I have now been engaged about two weeks (not quite)- I do assure you my Dear Genl, that every moment of my time is occupied- If I leave home to attend to some of my outside business, I am overtaken by a runner, that I am wanted- I am satisfied Genl, that to properly attend to the Freedmen of Grimes County and see them assume the Status that the laws of the land entitle them to; I will be entirely occupied with them, to the entire neglect of my business- Now Genl the bible tells that he who provideth not for his family denys the faith, and is worse than an infidel- now Genl I have weighed well the responsibility and expence of the position you so generously proffered, and accepted by myself - and I find most positively that a few months would impoverish me with out some compensation; I will now suggest a plan which I think will work harmoniously It is this, To levy a reasonable Tax upon contracts --
