application made for his detail, was by the Officer then in Command of the Regt., endorsed "Only Officer for duty with Company" where at the same time there were two, himself and the 1st Lieut, who at that time was only slightly sick. Wallace says his services with the Regt can be easily shared and as he is a very able man, I think he would fill my position with honor to himself and with credit to the U.S. Govmt. 

Many requests have been made of me to name certain hours for freedmen as field hands, as when to commence work and when to quit and I suggest the matter herewith to your consideration and decision. 

The same time with this I also forward you a small installment of the retained Copies of Contracts approved by me. You will find very many good and well written copies among them, but also some poor ones. Before receiving the Orders to forward them I accepted sorts of Documents, which I now refuse, but as it is not so much the form, paper or writing of the Contract, as the Conditions thereof and of which I can say that they are all to the best of the Freedmen and at far higher and more remunerative sales then on many other places I have heard of. I hope the outside appearance will be mitigated by the good they contain. 

I shall forward the rest as fast as I am able to put them on record, with the throng of business and the insufficiency of assistance.

The Letter referred to me for investigation in regard to Mrs. Col. Fearshey, I forward with report as soon as I amble [[am able]] to ascertain the facts in the case. I regret very much that I have not been able to attend to it any sooner, but the presence of
