Danville Texas Feb. 21/66 Genl. E. M. Gregory Comr. Refugees Freedmen & Abandon Lands Galveston Sir, Your Favor of 8th inst came duly to hand to day - contents duly noted. I received the order for the Freedwoman Dilsa Connel widow M A Connel to pay her - you do not say what amount. I have have handed the papers over and advised the woman to present it, and if refused settlement to return it and I would advise you. The questions answered satisfactory, I had drawn up some common former bonds guaranteeing rights of possession. I am glad such advice given is satisfactory - not acting under authority - My advice to the Freedmen is entirely gratuitous - but at the same time in as much as they are among us and are bound in the future to constitute a part of our society as citizens in altogether a different light to what they have done heretofore, formerly they moved as ordered - now they must be moved differently by means that will be most conducive to the general interests of both races. - which I believe can be done by us - I mean citizens through the country if we all pull together, that we have done here much better than I thought we could have done same few months ago - but I now fear no event.
