Captain,
It is reasonable to suppose I need some information as to the Maximum of my Jurisdiction under my appointment as Sub Asst Comss'r of the Bureau of which you are the Act Asst Adjt Genl. The Minimum I know, of that and on whom I shall make the necessary requisitions, stationery, office Furniture, and all the appurtenances of my office, I do not know, I believe I am the only appointee yet West of the Guadaloupe River, and fearing I may commit an Error, I have to day written to San Antonio, for information to guide me until I hear from you, if it is proper for you to reply, and to give me the necessary information.

All the practical part of any business I fully understand. With the necessary data to guide me I hope to be as effective, and to trouble you as little as any one holding under you.

Very Respectfully,
Your Most Obt Sert,
W. Longworth

Had the Gen'l known how long and how faithfully I have worked in the cause, I would have had the first appointment in the State
