Galveston, January 15th, 1866

C. H. Stone Chief Eng U.S. Revenue Steamer Delaware states that on the morning of the 14th Inst that one Jack Sheldon a soldier believed to belong to Co. B. 48th Ohio Infty without cause or provocation assaulted and old crippled negro man knocking him down and kicking him in face while he was down this in the streets of Galveston. the name of the negro is unknown the man Jack is at present confined in the Guard House at Galveston Sergt Byrne Co A 48th Ohio knows the parties who had Jack in arrest at the time the assault was committed

further that before and after the assault above described this man Sheldon was Disorderly cursing swearing and using foul language to all the passers by
